Auditions for 'Aladdin' Take Place Aug. 26

The Greensboro Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp on Friday, Aug. 26.

The event takes place from 5-8 p.m. on the first floor of the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie Street. Auditions also take place Saturday, Aug. 27 from 1-4 p.m.

The theatre is looking for children in fourth to ninth grades. Attendees will read from a script.

The play is about a poor boy that finds a magical lamp and unloosens the genie inside.

He tries to outsmart a villain who wants the lamp and manages to fall in love with the Sultan’s beautiful daughter.

Greensboro Aquatic Center to Host YMCA Swimming Event

The YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team has announced the 19th Annual TYR Capital Classic will be coming to the Greensboro Aquatic Center in December.

The three-day event takes place from December 16-18. Organizers say it is expected to draw about 600 swimmers, ages 12-19.

The event had previously been held at the Triangle Aquatics Center in Cary, NC.

“This should be the largest, fastest and most fun Capital Classic in our 19 year history,” said Head Coach Chad Onken, according to a press release.

The Greensboro Aquatic Center is scheduled to open in August. The 78,323-square-foot indoor facility will feauture leading edge concepts in aquatic design, officials said.

GAC to host 'Swim for Smiles'

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - On Saturday, September 10, the Swim for Smiles Foundation will hold a new youth triathlon event at the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC).

The Swim for Smiles Foundation just wrapped up its fifth annual youth triathlon in Chapel Hill in May.  The event is now the United States’ largest youth triathlon and the second largest in the world. All proceeds from this new Greensboro event will benefit the N.C. Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

The triathlon will start at 8:00 a.m. at the brand-new GAC’s indoor pool and move outside the GAC to the Coliseum Complex grounds for the bike and run segments. Distances for each segment are: a 100-meter swim, a five-kilometer bike and a one-kilometer run, identical to the USA-Triathlon Youth National Championships.

Free Italian Ice at new business

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - Rita’s Italian Ice is a opening a new location.  On Saturday, July 16 Rita’s is celebrating by giving away a free regular size Italian Ice to every customer for the first four days they are open.  The store will be the first Rita's location in the Piedmont.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - Fans of the Wyndham Championship have a chance to help Piedmont Triad charities.  All you have to is buy tickets for the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event.  The 72nd annual Wyndham Championship is August 15-21 at Sedgefield Country Club.

For every tournament ticket purchased, the Wyndham Championship will donate 50 percent of the proceeds to the Alamance County, Forsyth County, Greater High Point and Greater Greensboro United Way chapters.

Senior Center offering water aerobics

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - It's one of the fun things about summer and now you can get your workout in at the same time.

Registration begins Friday, July 15 at 9:00 a.m. for the Water Fitness classes at Smith Senior Center, located at 2401 Fairview Street.

Cathy McClellan teaches the class, which is open to adults, ages 18 years and older who want to improve and increase endurance, muscle tone and body composition through water resistance. Advanced swimmers can work out in deep water while non-swimmers can work out in the shallow end of the pool. Water noodles, water weights, floatation belts and circuit training are provided.   Fall classes will be held August 9 through September 29 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.

Greensboro IRS office to offer free help

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - The Taxpayer Assistance Center at 2303 West Meadowview Rd. in Greensboro will open on Saturday, July 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  IRS personnel will be available and ready to help with a fresh start and much more free assistance.
